The scarab is a symbol in ancient Egypt. The commemorative scarab is a piece of jewelry made for a pharaoh and representing a sacred scarab, on which a commemorative text is engraved. The text, about ten lines long, is engraved on the flat face of the scarab. It commemorates an important event of the reign. The king's cartouche can sometimes be added. The king sends a copy to all the sovereigns with whom he is in contact (in principle his vassals), which can therefore represent a significant number of copies.

The first Egyptian sovereigns to use this practice were Hyksos. Amenhotep III thus made a series of commemorative scarabs, the first concerning his marriage with Tiyi, the following ones the digging of a large basin forming a lake for Tiyi (allusion to the great works), then the hunt of bulls (allusion to Seth), the hunt of lions (allusion to power), his marriage with the Mittanian princess daughter of the king of Mittani (international prestige). In total, 250 examples of commemorative scarabs of Amenhotep III have been found. The places of discovery of these commemorative scarabs constitute a tracer of the influence of each king, this cartography providing information on the geographical extent of his influence.

In ancient Egypt, the scarab beetle represents the god Khepri, symbol of the rebirth of the Sun. The spherical ball that the sacred dung beetle rolls to its burrow was associated by the ancient Egyptians with the course of the sun and, by extension, with cosmic cycles. The scarab beetle therefore embodies the personification of the creator god, which led to the development of the figure of the god Khepri during the Old Kingdom. Objects in the shape of scarabs appear from the 6th dynasty. From the 18th dynasty, they can also bear inscriptions calling for good fortune.
