The Sabbats mark important times of the year when Wiccans celebrate and honor nature, deities, and the cycles of life.
Here is a brief description of the eight Sabbats in the order they occur in the wheel of the year:
- Samhain: It marks the end of the year and the beginning of the new cycle. It is a time to honor ancestors and otherworldly spirits.
- Yule: It's the winter solstice, the shortest day of the year. We celebrate the renewal of light and the gradual return of longer days.
- Imbolc: It celebrates the end of winter and the beginning of spring. It is a period of purification and preparation for the growth to come.
- Ostara: It is the spring equinox, where the duration of the day is equal to that of the night. We celebrate the renewal, fertility and rebirth of nature.
- Beltane: It is the culmination of spring, where nature is at its peak. We celebrate fertility, love and passion.
- Litha: It is the summer solstice, the longest day of the year. We celebrate the strength of the sun, growth and abundance.
- Lughnasadh: It is the harvest festival, where we give thanks for the harvests and the fruits of the work accomplished.
- Mabon: It is the autumnal equinox, when the duration of the day is again equal to that of the night. We celebrate balance, gratitude and preparation for fall and winter.
